7-1-2 The rules provide a certain amount of leeway when it comes to pre-snap adjustments. As seen in PlayPic A, tilting the ball before the snap is permitted. The ball may also be laterally rotated so the position of the laces changes (PlayPic B) and rule allow the ball to be lifted to accomplish that. The ball may not be rotated end for-end as in PlayPic C. While resting on the ground and before the snap, the long axis of the ball must be at right angles to the scrimmage line. Violation of any of those regulations results in a dead-ball foul and a five-yard penalty for an illegal snap.
