In 1974, the Board of Directors decided to form dedicated crews for Varsity games. Initially, the crews were assigned by a committee of the Board, but a few years later the concept of a draft was introduced. Each June, a draft is held where all 33 crew chiefs select their own 5-official crew for the upcoming season. This roster includes all currently active on-field officials who are eligible for selection in the annual crew draft.
Officials are responsible for purchasing and maintaining their own uniforms and equipment. They are required to wear the designated uniform, which must be clean and properly maintained, including shoes. The assigned Referee or Crew Chief will notify the crew if any optional items are permitted, but all officials must be uniform in appearance.
