Instructional Play Review: Calibration & Development
The following plays were selected by Steve Coover, Instructional Chair, or submitted by a crew chief for further review. Each play has been evaluated through a survey completed by Crew Chiefs, Instructors, and College Officials. The aggregated results of these surveys are included at the end of each play.
Please keep in mind that these plays have been intentionally chosen for their level of difficulty. They are not “routine” situations; they are designed to challenge your judgment and sharpen your decision-making.
Take your time. If it takes several minutes—and multiple replays—to fully process what is happening, that’s completely normal. Developing the ability to see action with clarity and detail takes time, repetition, and exposure to challenging material.
These play reviews are an opportunity for self-evaluation and crew discussion. Compare your decision on each play with the survey results, and if your call differs, reflect on what factors may have led to that difference. Crew discussions can be especially valuable in recognizing what each official sees (or misses) from different positions on the field.
The following plays were chosen by Steve Coover, our Instructional Chair, or sent in by crew chiefs and coaches for review. Each play is carefully evaluated and then discussed together during our instructional meetings, giving everyone a chance to learn from real-game situations.
The weekly Zoom meetings will go over the topics listed, rules, casebook plays and mini quizzes that are sent out prior to the meeting. The meetings include a veteran crew chief/instructor. Various other topics regarding officiating will be covered by current and former crew chiefs. Hosted by Katie Ott.
