Historic All-Female Officiating Crew Takes the Field at Mira Mesa High School

In a groundbreaking moment for high school athletics, Mira Mesa High School in San Diego, California, hosted a girl's flag football game on Thursday, October 16th, featuring an all-female officiating crew — the first in San Diego County Football Officiating history.

Football officials Katie Ott, Angela Rodriquez, and Paulette Melendrez made history as they took charge of both the junior varsity and varsity matchups between Mira Mesa and Kearny High Schools. Their teamwork and professionalism on the field went beyond enforcing the rules — they connected with players, coaches, and fans in a way that truly reflected the spirit of the game.

This moment was more than symbolic; it represented a

growing movement toward representation and inclusion in sports, demonstrating that women can excel and lead in every role — including those traditionally dominated by men.

Their achievement stands as an inspiration for the next generation of female athletes and officials, reminding everyone that the path forward in sports is one of opportunity, equality, and respect.
