9-4-5 In PlayPic A, the R player makes contact with the kicker, which causes the kicker to be displaced (PlayPic B). This is intended to illustrate running into the kicker.

9-4-5 In PlayPic A, the R player makes only slight contact with the kicker, which only causes the kicker to spin around (PlayPic B). The covering official could judge no foul on this play. 

9-4-5 In PlayPic A, the R player contacts the kicker's plant leg, making the kicker extremely vulnerable. The contact knocks the kicker to the ground (PlayPic B). This is an example of roughing the kicker.

9-4-5 In PlayPic A, the kicker takes the snap. Another K player blocks an onrushing R player (PlayPic B). The block causes the R player to contact the kicker (PlayPic C), knocking him to the ground (PlayPic D). Because the R player's block caused the contact on the kicker, there is no foul 

9-4-5 A 15-yard penalty is applicable when there is illegal contact on the kicker/holder. the penalty also carries an automatic first down. A bad snap does not automatically eliminate the kicker's protection from roughing.
